BEAVER CREEK. This tough, semi-private course challenges even the most experienced golfers with steep, serpentine fairways that are seemingly carved out of the sides of dramatic canyons and daunting mountainsides. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the course's elevated tee boxes make hitting the narrow fairways that much tougher – if you don't feel like you have control of your big stick, it'd best to keep it sheathed. Even if it's not your day on the course, you can take solace in one thing: the views it offers are nothing short of spectacular.

GYPSUM. The public is welcome at this rocky residential course, which was designed by Pete Dye and spreads out over a steep, sage-covered mesa. Opened in 1997, this challenging course beguiles golfers with splendid natural scenery and lulls them into states of false confidence with its rolling fairways, which are flanked by native piñon and juniper trees. However, all the bravado ends upon reach number six, Cotton Ranch's signature hole, a daunting par-five that exceeds 550 from the back tees and is almost never reached in two shots thanks to prevailing winds that prevent the 300-plus-yard drives needed to do so! Thereafter, steep drop offs and tough angles are the status quo, creating a truly tough day for many long hitters.

EDWARDS. Cordillera actually boasts a handful of options for those planning on a round or two of Rocky Mountain-style golf. Indeed, the trifecta of 18-hole courses: the peakside Summit Course was designed by the Golden Bear himself; the Hale Irwin-designed Mountain Course traverses scenic ridges, meadows, and forestland; and the Valley Club was designed by Tom Fazio and boasts desert-like topography and open fairways that present golfers with different challenges presented by the latter two courses. Not to be overlooked is the 10-hole Short Course, which sits on a high, flat plateau and offers folks the chance to hone their skills while taking in unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape.

WOLCOTT. Located just a few miles west of Beaver Creek, this golf club features two distinctly different courses. The Fazio course presents a dramatic array of terrain, sweeping mountain vistas, and clear views of Vail's Back Bowls. Rugged, sagebrush-covered landscapes on the front nine give way to the steeper, aspen and juniper-fringed back nine. The Greg Norman-designed course, meanwhile, is noteworthy for its various hazards and obstructions, which range from jagged crags and tricky scrub oaks to his signature bunkers. Only members and guests of Vail Resorts, Pines Lodge in Beaver Creek, and the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch properties may play at either of the Red Sky courses.
