EDITOR REVIEW: Flowing north from the southern part of the state, the New River has cut a stunningly beautiful gorge through the rock here, creating a popular tourist attraction and a haven for wildlife. Established in 1978, the New River Gorge National River protects 53 miles of free-flowing waterways. There are a variety of recreational activities along the river, including boating, hiking, camping, bicycling, and horseback riding. The well known New River Gorge Bridge is accessed from the Canyon Rim visitor center, on U.S. Route 19, about 30 minutes north of Beckley.
