BELIZE DISTRICT. This Maya ruin is one of the most accessible from Belize City, located 55 miles to the north. Almost 500 buildings comprise Altun Ha, which was a center for Maya trade from 250-900 AD. The Temple of the Sun God, the Temple of the Green Tomb and an early reservoir are some of the most impressive sights. Altun Ha is also notable because the Jade Head was discovered here. This exquisite carving is the largest jade sculpture ever found in the Mayan region. If you don't feel up to finding Altun Ha on your own, many tour operators offer half-day trips. On cruise ship days, be sure to arrive early to beat the buses.
