BELIZE DISTRICT.   Plan to spend at least two hours at "the best little zoo in the world," as the Belize Zoo is known, plus thirty minutes each way from Belize City. This is one of the nation's most popular tourist attractions, 30 miles outside of Belize City. The Belize Zoo was established in the mid-1980s as a "retirement home" for native wild animals that had been used in documentary films about Belize and were no longer able to fend in the wild. Animals are not caged, but are confined in spacious zones that mimic their natural environment. You will need to be patient to see some animals; the jaguar especially is known for hiding in his lush jungle foliage, but if you wait long enough he's sure to come out for a photo. Ocelots, gibnuts, howler monkeys, iguanas, toucans and egrets are among the other animals on display. The zoo also offers night tours and reasonably priced sleeping accommodations. Lots of education and ecology programs for groups and classes.   (© 10Best)
