BELIZE DISTRICT. The Belize Audubon Society manages this unique preserve, located on an island in the middle of a freshwater lake. The 16,400 acres of waterways, logwood swamps and lagoon provide habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including hundreds of resident and migratory birds – all year long. More than 200 species have been recorded. The most famous visitor is the migrating Jabiru Stork. With a wingspan stretching from 10 to 12 feet, these are the largest flying birds in North America. Ibis, herons and egrets are other common sights.
