BELIZE DISTRICT. Black howler monkeys are called "baboons" in Belize, and they swing from the leafy tree canopy at this unique wildlife preserve. 220 local farmers in nine communities banded together to conserve their land to guarantee habitat for these creatures. The resulting preserve spreads over 20 square miles, and is home to more than 4000 monkeys. Canoe and motorboat tours follow the river that winds through the preserve, and affordable accommodations are available if you want to spend the night.
