Along with other member countries of the British Commonwealth, Belizeans celebrate the Queen's birthday each year in May. In Belize City, this means a public holiday, horse races in the National Stadium, and a bicycle race between Cayo and Belmopan.

A week of celebration accompanies the annual anniversary of the Battle of St. George's Caye. The British defeat of a Spanish Armada in 1798 is the reason English is spoken in Belize instead of Spanish (like in the rest of Central America). Belize City hosts an annual parade on September 10.

On the dawn of November 19, the Garifuna community re-enacts their ancestors' boat landing on Belizean shores in 1823. Though the main celebration is in Dangriga, down the coast, things can get rowdy in Belize City as well, with an all-night drinking and music party the night before and after the reenactment.

In Garifuna culture, the day after Christmas is cause for a big celebration featuring wandering bands of celebrants doing the Charikanari dance and shots of “bitters.” Though the biggest events are in Dangriga, you may spot roving bands of drummers and dancers in Belize City as well.
