Admittedly, picking one or two top-notch restaurants from the many located throughout Seattle can be a daunting task. Top Gun Seafood, though, makes at least one of the choices a no-brainer – its famously tasty dim sum and traditional Chinese fare attract a large number of fans every day, especially at lunch. White linens and friendly service are added perks. Best of all, prices at this Bellevue seafood restaurant won't send you running to the bank for a loan.   (© 10Best)

To be fair, dim sum is not my favorite kind of Chinese food. I like it just fine, but in general I prefer to order off the menu. Top Gun is, at least at lunch, optimized for dim sum and this is clearly what they do best. But when I asked for a lunch menu (and they do have a lunch menu) they looked at me as if I had asked for a cheeseburger. I asked four different servers for a lunch menu while carts of dim sum rolled by at regular intervals. I finally had to go ask the hostess if someone would please take my order. In all, it took about 20 minutes for anyone to take my order (absolutely unacceptable on a work day), and that was only because I repeatedly asked. Eventually someone came to the table and let me order, but he was not particularly friendly. I think that they do dim sum so much that they were thrown off by my request but overall I found the staff somewhere between pre-occupied and indifferent and at times incompetent. I ordered Kung Pao chicken. I usually order this my first time in a new Chinese place because I have found it to be a good measure of a Chinese restaurant. When the Kung Pao finally came, it was extremely spicy (and I like spicy food), and had very little sauce or flavor other than the red pepper in which it was drenched. There was not much chicken; it was mostly celery as I remember and was absolutely the worst Kung Pao chicken I have ever had. I have had better Kung Pao Chicken in Star, ID and Pooler, GA. Other than the pot stickers, which are the best I have ever tasted, I did not care too much for the dim sum items. The beef balls had a texture somewhere between rubbery and gelatinous; more like an industrial material than food. The little custard tarts we tried for dessert didn't do it for me either, too “eggy” and warm. I LOVE good Chinese food and God knows I have eaten more than my share over the years at many different restaurants all across the nation. It may be that Top Gun is just a little too "authentic" for my taste. They were very busy and most of the customers were Chinese, both of which are usually very good signs. But my experience there was not great and I almost certainly won't be back. There are just too many other good choices for Chinese food in the area.
