BERKELEY. These purveyors of fine coffee and Italian pastries have a long history in the Bay area. The original North Beach location was the first on the West Coast to offer espresso, back in the 1950s. Then, it was roasted and prepared by Italian immigrant Giovanni Giotta, and he's still at the helm, along with his wife and kids. In Berkeley, coffee lovers find great cappucino, along with muffins, sandwiches, salads, and pizza. In keeping with tradition, there's live music every Sunday afternoon, primarily jazz and opera. A classy, relaxed café equally suited for idle afternoons and breakfast with the family.
