GOURMET GHETTO WEST.   Elegantly simple country French fare has legions of fans, especially when it's created by Alice Waters, also of Chez Panisse fame. With a zinc bar, a huge vaulted skylight, and handmade tiles, this casual cafe incorporates lots of natural light and a cheerful vibe. Breakfast consists of eggs, toast, crepes, and famously delicious organic granola (it's available by the box on your way out). Lunch is mainly fresh-made sandwiches and salads, along with a pâté plate and beef stroganoff. Desserts are uncomplicated but excellent, especially beignets and ginger cake.   (© 10Best)
