GOURMET GHETTO. Since the early 1990s, this small causal restaurant has admirably sated Berkeley's sushi cravings. Impeccably fresh fish is expertly prepared, with fabulous end results. Bamboo rolls include crab and tobiko, eel and cucumber, and yellowtail and tobiko; Nigiri selections are equally good, especially the baby seaweed squid. Bento boxes, noodle dishes, and broiled meats and seafood provide ample choice for meat-eaters, but there are plenty of vegetarian options, including veggie sushi, stir fires, tempura, and sukiyaki.

Unicorn offers intrepid diners an innovative variety of Pan-Asian dishes and an artfully casual-elegant atmosphere that complements its Berkeley location. Crispy mango prawns, lemongrass roasted quails, five spice duck, and traditional and vegetarian sushi rolls are beautifully presented and skillfully prepared, and those are just the appetizers. You'll have a hard time choosing an entrée – Thai firepot, claypot baked chicken or fish, jumbo prawns with coconut and mustard, filet of bass with vegetables baked in rice paper – the list goes on. To make things a little less stressful, choose one of the combination dinners, which feature a representative variety of flavors.
