Breakfast and lunch never had it so good! Bette serves up all the traditional favorites, like pancakes, waffles, and scrambled eggs, but since it's all made with the absolute freshest ingredients it tastes that much better. No limp, heat-lamped flapjacks here! Make no mistake, this is classic diner food, with the classic diner ambience to go with it, but everything is a notch above. The counters sparkle, the napkin dispensers gleam, the jukebox rocks, and the food sings.

The best thing about the Scharffen Berger café is, as you might guess, dessert. Along with an assortment of chocolate cookies that are just begging for a tall cold glass of milk, the menu offers something for more sophisticated palates. Standouts include chocolate-cardamom souffle and bittersweet chocolate-rum tart, but if you're craving a big slice of good old fashioned chocolate fudge cake, you'll find that too. A full range of coffee drinks, teas, and dessert wines are available to complement your dessert of choice. The lunch and dinner menus focus on fresh salads and gourmet sandwiches.

Populated by a diverse cross section of Berkeley denizens, Caffe Strada draws its fair share of students from the university across the street. Great coffee is just the tip of the iceberg, though. Awesome and budget friendly sandwiches and pastries are ideal alongside a tall skinny latte or an out of this world bittersweet mocha. Great patio seating, too.

BERKELEY. These purveyors of fine coffee and Italian pastries have a long history in the Bay area. The original North Beach location was the first on the West Coast to offer espresso, back in the 1950s. Then, it was roasted and prepared by Italian immigrant Giovanni Giotta, and he's still at the helm, along with his wife and kids. In Berkeley, coffee lovers find great cappucino, along with muffins, sandwiches, salads, and pizza. In keeping with tradition, there's live music every Sunday afternoon, primarily jazz and opera. A classy, relaxed café equally suited for idle afternoons and breakfast with the family.

GOURMET GHETTO. Although it was founded as a private business, the Cheese Board philosophy has always been that of a collectively owned and operated enterprise. Each member owns an equal share of the business, contributes an equal number of hours, and has a position on the board of directors. Perhaps since everyone has so much of themselves invested, the shop and café have been amazingly popular and successful. Along with an astounding variety of artisan cheeses, the shop specializes in out of this world homemade breads and pastries. There are a few tables out front where you can enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or tea, along with a muffin, scone, or tasty sandwich.

GOURMET GHETTO. With a reputation for artistry that surpasses most others in the Bay area, Masse's creates some of the most breathtaking pastries you will ever see. Think spun sugar sports cars, crystallized flowers, perfect little marzipan fruits, and elaborate piped, drizzled, and flecked icing. You probably wouldn't expect anything this attractive to actually have much flavor other than sweetness, but Masse's takes taste just as seriously as presentation. Whether you're choosing a multi layer pistachio and apricot torte, a couple of cookies, freshly baked brioche, or a chocolate croissant, rest assured it will be blissfully tasty.

GOURMET GHETTO. A longtime Berkeley favorite, the original Peet's opened in 1966. Now a small chain, Peet's has four other locations in Berkeley, along with several throughout California. The drink menu is extensive, and includes hot, chilled, and blended coffees and teas. A veritable army of avid regulars, affectionately referred to as Peetniks, get their daily java fix here, even though Peet's coffees and teas are now available in many supermarkets. A fun and relaxed place to hang out.

FOURTH STREET. Gelato-style ice cream in fresh and sometimes unusual flavors is Sketch's forte, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any better. Utilizing seasonal fruits – Mariposa plums, peaches, persimmons – ensures superior taste, and you'll find traditional chocolate and vanilla as well. Oakland's Blue Bottle coffee is used for Sketch's unbeatable coffee ice cream, but don't expect to get it in a regular old cone. Select a freshly made crepe or waffle, or create your own ice cream sandwich with a choice of four homemade cookies.
