CHARLOTTENBURG - WILMERSDORF. Dark, smoky, swanky, and jiving – A-Trane is the quintessential Berlin jazz venue, a joint that provides the perfect end to a busy day of meetings or sightseeing. Performers are known the world over, from Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis to Nina Hill and Alice Coltrane, and the hip, knowledgable crowd keeps a cacophony going over the intimate den. If you're searching for "cool" in Berlin, this is the place to find it. S-BAHN: Savignyplatz

MITTE. Upscale, trendy, and ... well, long and attenuated: Bar Am Lützowplatz has no problem attracting Berlin's young professionals, thanks to its extensive drink menu. Of course, it lays proud claim to an attractive, blond-wood bar (the city's longest), which promises ample opportunity to rub elbows and chat while waiting for your favorite cocktail. Comfortable leather-backed chairs line the wall in the back, providing spots for intimate conversation. Take note: thanks to its popularity and narrow confines, Bar Am Lützowplatz tends to get crowded and stay packed until closing time. U-BAHN: Nollendorferplatz

TEMPELHOF - SCHÖNEBERG. Berlin's colorful Latin community shares its rich dance and musical heritage at this popular nightclub, located near the post office on Hauptstrasse. Tropical decor, live salsa and merengue pulsating from the sound system, and a youthful clientele eager to show off their best footwork and most stylish duds all combine to make the club's three dance floors among Berlin's hottest spots once the sun goes down. An hour prior to opening, dance classes are offered to novices. U-BAHN: Rathaus Schöneberg or Eisenracher Strasse

MITTE. A classic West Berlin watering hole, Newton juxtaposes the classy with the avant-garde. The interior features comfortable leather armchairs, cool marble, blond wood, and a crescent-shaped bar set against a seductive backdrop of floor-to-ceiling, black-and-white Helmut Newton nudes. Indeed, young, well-dressed professionals place such high stock in Newton that they bring their international clients to sip wine, check out the action on Gendarmenmarkt, and close the deal. That is, if they make it past the doorman! Cigar aficionados, meanwhile, find safe-haven in the upstairs lounge, whose humidor features primo cigars imported from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. CHARLOTTENBURG - WILMERSDORF. Located beneath the Quasimodo Cafe and Delphi Cinema, this much-loved jazz cellar is one of Berlin's oldest. Indeed, you can always be sure of one thing at Quasimodo – hearing fabulous music. In recent years, the joint's repertoire has expanded, and top-flight jazz is complemented by a good mix of blues, Latin and funk. As for the scene, few places are as conducive to intimate live performances: tables are strategically spaced to maximize sight-lines, and the bar is located on the opposite end of the room. As a result, folks waiting for drinks don't have to congregate around ones catching the show. U-BAHN: Bahnhof Zoo

MITTE. This trendy, concrete-walled club, built into the side of Heinrich Heine Strasse Station, is a must for the devil-may-care traveler. Billed as one of Berlin's hottest upstart dance clubs and live music venues, Sage has built its rep on a posh interior and a state-of-the-art sound system that deadens the eardrums with pulsing funk and techno. Plus, the floor plan features a futuristic dance floor, an Eastern-inspired outdoor balcony, and a rooftop pool area. A word to the wise: If you want to get in, dress to the nines and act like you belong – even then, there's no guarantee. U-BAHN: Heinrich Heine Strasse

The glass-fronted Watergate is worth checking out if only for the location. While the club boasts two floors of international DJs spinning sounds ranging from minimal electro to house music, it also overlooks the Spree river and Oberbaum bridge, which look beautiful by night. Dress sharp to fit in with the local hipsters. U-BAHN: Schlesisches Tor

This camouflage-clad warehouse by the Spree river is Berlin's home to big-name reggae and dancehall acts. YAAM stands for "Young and African Art Market," and the vibe is welcoming and open-minded. In between and after shows, the club's resident DJs mix up new Jamaican sounds with selected classics. In summer the venue really heats up when the sound-system heads outdoors. U-BAHN: Ostbahnhof
