MITTE. Located on the northwest side of Tiergarten, Paris-Moskau subtly joins Old World elegance and modern-day panache, resulting in one of West Berlin's more unique dining experiences. The restaurant, set in a circa-1898 railroad signalman's house, earned its name from its proximity to the line connecting Paris and Moscow. Featured entrees include Limousin lamb with pepper-bean ragout, rotbarbe with pea purée, and chicken prepared in Riesling with vegetable risotto. The impeccable wine list includes bottles from Spain, Portugal, the Rhine Valley, France, Tuscany, and even Australia. Reservations are encouraged. S-BAHN: Bellevue

MITTE. Modern Med-inspired cuisine earns top billing at Maxwell, which occupies the circa-1878 Josty Brewery. Its mid-'90s redesign is punctuated by contemporary artwork by Brit-born artist Damien Hirst. In fact, the restaurant even pays homage to the artist with popular Duck à la Damien Hirst, served with black pepper sauce and vegetable rolls. Other superb entrees include grilled sirloin steak with ratatouille and parmesan-crusted breast of corn-fed chicken with black mushrooms and potato-rocket flan. In the summer, the secluded courtyard is a popular destination for couples. Terrific wine list too. Reservations are encouraged. S-BAHN: Nordbahnhof; U-BAHN: Rosentalerplatz

MITTE. Business people enjoy this trendy restaurant for its refreshing decor and creative cuisine. The skilled kitchen staff is known far and wide for creating such intriguing dishes as aspic of suckling pig with sauerkraut and leg of lamb with braised vegetables. Although the interior is thoughtfully decorated in contemporary style, courtyard dining offers the optimal experience. Large wooden umbrellas set the scene for guests to enjoy a respite from their stuffy offices and take advantage of a pleasant dining experience. Reservations recommended. S-BAHN: Hausvogteiplatz

MITTE. This restaurant is worth checking out if only for the décor. Its owners have installed the over-sized furnishings of a kitsch Chinese restaurant into an antique Irish bar. The combination can only be described as unique – clashing, trashy plastic decorations against dark, carved woodwork. The result has a saloon-bar feel, but it might also be the music – the restaurant serves up some great live entertainment, including country, rockabilly and burlesque acts. The service is a contradictory mix of ice-cold attitude and genuine friendliness, but bear with it for the best burgers and fries in town. U-BAHN: Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz
