ST GEORGE'S PARISH. In 1620, British citizen Sir George Somers died in Bermuda. His nephew knew that superstitious sailors would not willingly transport a corpse back to England, so he had his uncle's entrails and organs removed and then had the body embalmed and placed in a sealed cedar box. Thanks to his ruse, the box and its secret contents successfully arrived in Lyme, England. Sir George's heart and other organs remain buried in these gardens in Bermuda. In 1920, the area became a public park, and a monument in the walled garden commemorates the man's memory.
