MAUNA KEA STATE RECREATION AREA. If you're anywhere in the general vicinity of Mauna Kea, visiting this Big Island attraction's a must. The 14,000 foot summit is the largest in the world, and the lack of air pollution makes it one of the best places in the world for stargazing. If you're not up for the challenge of making it to the top of Mauna Kea (no one under 16, with health problems, or pregnant is allowed), the visitor's center is the perfect place to look through a few telescopes and learn more about the surroundings.
