KAWAIHAE. Another Big Island temple dedicated to the war gods, Puukohola Heiau means "temple on the Hill of the whale." This is where legendary King Kamehameha sacrificed his mortal enemy, Keoua, thereby uniting all of Hawai’i under one reign. Today, the site acts as an important shrine to Hawaii history and the ancient monarchy. In addition, guests are welcome to participate in water sports, fishing, hiking and other outdoor activities while they visit one of the best Hawaii historic sites the island has to offer.
