KONA COAST. This local favorite is almost always packed, a testament to its fantastic American comfort food, which sparkles with Hawaiian touches. The catch of the day is always a sure bet, and you don't want to miss the salad of mixed local greens topped with coconut shrimp. The restaurant also does something magical to mashed potatoes – you may find yourself actually swooning. A drive-through window lets you grab lunch on the run, and service is friendly and family-oriented. Plus, the total bill won't empty your wallet.

KAMUELA. Specializing in gourmet Continental fare that ranges from wiener schnitzel and New Zealand rack of lamb to roast duck braised in orange sauce, Edelweiss has been a Big Island favorite since the late 1980s. The upscale but unpretentious setting features Bavarian-inspired decor – and, yes, that is a working fireplace.

KONA COAST. A familiar favorite, Hard Rock Cafe has locations all over the globe. Highlights of the Kona restaurant include a signed Gene Simmons Axe bass guitar, the pants Gwen Stefani wore in No Doubt's "Don't Speak" video, a promotional poster for the March 1, 1969 Doors concert in Miami, and a suede jacket worn by Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi during the band's 1974 tour. The bar scene is pretty lively, so you may find yourself with a memorable cocktail in hand – a fruity Riders on the Storm, minty Howling Wolf, or Lovely Rita margarita. When you're hungry, burgers, sandwiches, and salads are always reliable.

KOHALA COAST. Ranked by a variety of local publications as the Big Island's top seafood restaurant, Harbor Grill sports a quintessential Hawaiian look and feel, from its upstairs tiki-style cocktail lounge to its authentic Hawaiian music. The place serves divine steamed clams and West Coast oysters (a dozen of either is always a winner), along with a versatile menu that covers the gamut, boasting pizzas, ribs, steaks, and burgers.

VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK. Whetting appetites in the Big Island's "warm" Volcano community, Kilauea has garnered quite a reputation with locals and tourists alike. The cozy, lodge-like setting seems to step right out of the pages of a Western adventure novel – stone fireplace, vaulted wood-beamed ceiling, koa wood furniture, and rustic hardwood floors. The menu sports a Continental theme, and featured dishes range from duck à l'orange to lamb Provençal with papaya mint sauce to Parker Ranch prime rib au jus with whipped horseradish.

KOHALA COAST. Attractive, upscale, romantic – there's no limit to the praise patrons heap on this Kohala legend, which fancies itself the Big Island's only "serious" steakhouse. The setting does, in fact, recollect a certain dinner club charm, thanks to a vaulted ceiling, elaborate chandeliers, dark koa wood accents and trim, and comfortably arranged tables. Thrown-open French doors add an island touch. Steaks, dry-aged and expertly flavored with Hawaiian sea salt and roasted garlic, are nothing short of sublime, and daily seafood specials serve as nice alternatives. Live entertainment nightly.
