KAINALIU. Although breakfast is the most important meal of the day, sometimes it can be a chore to find a decent breakfast that you actually want to eat. While you're on the Big Island, that's not a problem. One of the best places for omelets, waffles, breakfast sandwiches, and pancakes is Aloha Angel, which began life as a snack bar and is part of the Aloha Theatre. It has evolved into a much-loved café, and it serves breakfast until 1:30pm (so there's no excuse to skip it). The lunch menu features sandwiches, salads, wraps, and burgers; dinner consists of fresh fish dishes, Tex-Mex favorites, and steaks. Small wine list, or bring your own – corkage is $7 per bottle.

Locally grown and roasted on-site, the beans produce such a unique flavor and aroma that you may find yourself returning every day to get your coffee fix. Muffins, bagels, and other bakery items round out the offerings, and bags of coffee beans are sold for home use as well.

KOHALA COAST. Take a step back in time and experience Big Island living the way it was before modern resorts and development took over. Once a hotel and later a grocery, the building that houses this popular restaurant (which dates from 1911) has been almost completely restored to its original state and features a green saloon-like facade, bamboo and koa wood accents, and hardwood flooring. Brunch is not to be missed, and house specialties include poached eggs with lilikoi hollandaise sauce and Mamona Paloa Toast, a cinnamon-dusted island version of French toast. A gallery inside the restaurant showcases local art, especially woodworking.

HILO. Café 100 has been around for years, and it continues to offer great, filling food at unbeatable prices. In fact, it's the ideal place to try Hawaiian comfort food. Take the Loco Moco, for instance – it's a heap of white rice topped with a hamburger patty and a fried egg, then smothered in gravy. Café 100 invented it back in the early 1950s, and today, they offer several variations, including one made with Spam. Although the Loco Moco is served all day, you may want to sample other dishes, which range from Kalua pork to beef stew and teriyaki beef.

HILO. The classic breakfast standby, Ken's stays open 24-7. Breakfast is a serious affair, no matter what time of day, and the waitstaff ensures that patrons stay "well oiled" by leaving a full pot of steaming coffee at each table. Favored fare includes French toast, traditional short stacks smothered in maple syrup, hearty omelets, and waffles. If breakfast isn't your gig, never fear – they also serve up delicious hamburgers, hot and cold sandwiches, and fried chicken plates.

KONA COAST. Chef/owner Amy Ferguson Ota has been featured in Julia Child's "Cooking with Master Chefs" and has been nominated for the James Beard award. Her concept dishes run the gamut, featuring a fascinating repertoire of European and Far Eastern noodle dishes. An especially appealing aspect of the restaurant is its daily "late breakfast," which starts at 10am and runs to noon on weekdays, 2pm on weekends. Along with salads and appetizers, it promises French toast, breakfast burritos, and O's Loco Moco, which features fish, fried rice, and eggs.

KONA COAST. Stained koa wood walls, potted palms, an enchanting tropical aquarium, and magnificent sunset vistas set the stage for romance at this Kona Coast charmer. While the Pacific-themed dinner menu has won over evening crowds, traditional breakfast fare like corned-beef hash with crispy potatoes, banana-stuffed brioche, and huevos rancheros with chorizo sausage and black beans ensure a grand start to each day. Guests wishing to dine al fresco enjoy romantically appointed tables that offer sweeping views of the dramatic Hawaiian coastline.
