This is one of the premier restaurants in Birmingham. Once you enter daniel george (an amalgamation of the owners' first names), you're immediately charmed by the space's sophisticated yet charming atmosphere. The wine list is extensive, as you might expect, but what really wins rave views are the creative American numbers prepared in the kitchen. NB Though the menu changes daily, you can always count on outstanding game, Gulf seafood dishes and French Cuisine as well, with selections like Couq Au Vin and Bolognaise.

DOWNTOWN. When the subject of Alabama legends comes up, Dreamland should no doubt be mentioned in the same breath as George Wallace, Bear Bryant, and Bo Jackson. Known far and wide for their sinfully delicious BBQ ribs, "Big Daddy" Bishop and crew took a simple concept (ribs, their signature sauce, and a few pieces of white Sunbeam bread) and, over the years, developed it into something that can only be described as down-home gourmet. Rustic decor, historic signs, and old photos decorate the walls, recreating the character of the original Jerusalem Heights location, but the food truly steals the show. As the saying goes, "Ain't nothing like' em nowhere!"

Described as serving global cuisine with local ingredients, don't let the name of this restaurant confuse you. The owner's great-great grandfather belonged to a gentleman's club of the same name in South Carolina. Winner of the 1998 Robert Mondavi "Award of Excellence," the restaurant's entrees include wood-fired duck, seared grouper and hickory-grilled sirloin. An extensive wine list is also available. Reservations are recommended.

The inspiration for the Whistle Stop Café in the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes," this cafeteria-style eatery sits beside train tracks and does, in fact, serve fried green tomatoes (between 60 to 70 pounds of them a day!). The menu changes daily but includes all of your Southern favorites, such as fried chicken, meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

DOWNTOWN. "Hold to your hat!" ... That's always good advice for folks planning to visit this downhome Southern fav, whose first restaurant opened in B-Ham back when Bear Bryant was running things. Pork, chicken and savory brisket are lovingly prepared the old fashioned way – slow-cooked over a hickory wood fire – and will satisfy even the heartiest appetite. Exposed brick walls, dark wood, and historic pictures of Birmingham give the 11th Avenue Grill a cozy feeling that will have you coming back again and again.
