6. Plantsbrook Community Nature Park

Once slated for bulldozers and asphalt, this site was bought by the city and opened to community use. A few miles northeast of Birmingham, the park contains forests, meadows, and several pools that are home to area wildlife. Rangers make sure that the trails and boardwalks are well maintained on the 28-acre site. A parking lot is available.   (© 10Best)
