BISMARK. A must for families with small children, the Dakota Zoo is home some 125 species of animals including Alaskan brown bears, gray wolves, bald eagles, Mexican orange knee tarantulas, and several primates. Guests will be thrilled to find many of the animals living in settings that closely resemble their natural habitats, as in the bear and otter exhibits, for example. The zoo first opened its doors in 1961, and its reputation has only grown over the years, with average attendance exceeding more than 100,000 people annually.

MOFFIT. A mecca for bird watchers in South Central North Dakota, Long Lake is a narrow body of water stretching some 18 miles that is home to numerous species of fowl, from shore birds to birds of prey. The refuge also encompasses more than 22,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie, wetlands, and cultivated uplands, which serve as nesting habitats for migratory species. Among the feathery residents you'll likely encounter on an outing here are bald eagles, northern pintail and gadwall ducks, spotted sandpipers, and ring-necked pheasants. The refuge is also home deer, coyotes, foxes, beavers, and other species of mammals.
