4. Monument aux Girondins (Girondins Monument)

Built between 1895-1902, this fountain sculpture commemorates the French Republic and honors the casualties of the Revolutionary Terror. A 121 foot high column is capped with a statue known as "Liberty Breaking the Chains," while the base is shielded by a sculpted team of horses. The horses were commandeered by German soldiers during WWII but were later returned unharmed.   (© 10Best)
