FENWAY DISTRICT. This lovely art museum was first opened in 1903 by Isabella Stewart Gardner. The building is a grand old stone structure of three stories that centers around an interior courtyard filled with beautiful plants and flowers. The artwork in the museum consists of paintings, sculpture, antique furniture, silver, ceramics, and tapestries from about 30 different centuries. Ms. Gardner personally acquired many of the items seen in the museum today. Among other things, she loved the work of Dante and bought many of his rare edition books; she also admired rare Dutch and Italian paintings, which visitors can see scattered throughout the museum.
