CAMBRIDGE. As you scour Central Square looking for a cool, different way to spend your Friday night, don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for the glass door with the red elephant painted on it. Odds are excellent you'll thank yourself because the stairway behind it leads to one of Cambridge's hippest lounges. Located above Central Kitchen, the seductive Enormous Room appeals to the young and sexy crowd by featuring cutting edge DJs, awesome Med-influenced dishes and well-mixed drinks. NB Contrary to what the name indicates, this Room isn't really that enormous, so dress accordingly and be prepared to rub elbows when it's busy.

DOWNTOWN. Spanning four levels, this ultra-hip lounge at Downtown Crossing offers a variety of after-hours diversions for discerning patrons with deep pockets. The main-level restaurant is terrific for a pre-theatre or a late night bite of Mediterranean pizza. On the second level, cool crowds gather to lounge, dance and shoot a few games of billiards. Immediately upstairs you'll find a similar spread, only this one is designated for VIPs. And state-of-the-art light and sound systems (and occasional live bands) get folks grooving on the fourth floor, where the dance floor is complemented by suave tans and suedes, a marble-topped bar and cushy banquettes.

BACK BAY. While glitz and glam are terms that don't necessary apply in Boston like they do in a city like, say, New York, there are a few establishments in the former that cater to the discriminating patron's palate. This handsome restaurant and lounge is just such a place, combing sophisticated design elements (LED-lit bars and stairwells, maple ceilings, and weathered brick walls) with fine New American cuisine. True hipsters, though, brush past the folks gathered at the bar or seated in the restaurant and make their way down the stairs to the suave lounge area, where celeb DJs and deep-pocketed VIPs hold sway. NB Tables in the lounge are by reservation only.

SEAPORT DISTRICT. Old Blue Eyes may no longer be with us, but his spirit lives on in places like the Lucky. Yes, an old school brand of cool pervades at this warehouse speakeasy, where lounge music, old photographs, and outstanding martinis recall the days when the Rat Pack was all the rage and being hip meant something far more than it does today. Once here, you may decide to set up shop for a while, especially when you get a load of the classic American eats (steaks, mac & cheese, meatloaf) served up in the kitchen. Their popular Sunday brunch is accompanied by live music from 11am to 2pm.

DORCHESTER. Once a charming Irish pub, this spot has been reincarnated as a trendy neighborhood spot that serves up creative fare (Cajun carbonara or butternut squash risotto, for example) and perfectly complements it with fascinating cocktails like the espresso martini. Aesthetically, dabar captures a touch of big city suave, from the fantastic light shows to the sleek yet comfortable leather booths and sexy bar area. This is especially so after 10pm, when the place transforms from restaurant to cocktail lounge, complete with DJs who spin their own cool, brands of "bar grooves."

BACK BAY. Alluring 20 to 30-somethings gather at this lounge in search of satisfying eats, flavorful martinis and hot company. A sleek, built-in fireplace graces the wall at eye-level, and closely-placed tables and long, red banquettes provide plenty of seating. Match's signature Mini Burgers come in several versions, including the classic cheese, veggie, spicy lamb or New England lobster burger. Spicy shrimp and chorizo skewers and gingery chicken satay are the perfect "match" for a potent cocktail.

SOUTH END. A lounge that transcends cool, 28's wins high marks thanks to its suave atmosphere, inventive cuisine and superb cocktails. Indeed, whether it's to indulge in tuna tartare, to savor a key lime martini (the lounge, after all, is named after the optimal chilling temperature for martinis), or to listen to the hip soundtrack assembled by that night's DJ, this South Ender is the type of place where hip, young urbanites hold sway. Aesthetically, the space features basic black and white walls, dim lighting and soft, comfortable banquettes.

DOWNTOWN. Once a '50s-style martini bar, Good Life has been reincarnated as a sleek, European vodka lounge bent on attracting a young, sophisticated brand of clientele. All signs indicate the place has hit its mark on a formula that includes more than 130 brands of vodka, live music, DJs, iPOD parties, and revolving art collections that promote local work. If you're looking to dine, the kitchen's bistro-inspired fare includes such well conceived numbers as butternut squash ravioli and roasted Atlantic salmon.
