BACK BAY. The atmosphere at this notable Irish pub/bar is casual yet energy-charged, and the hotel establishment is perfect for an after-work stopover. O'Connor's features a great menu of Irish eats as well as a fully-stocked bar (including the obligatory Guiness). TVs also dot the place, keeping folks abreast of what's happening in the world of soccer. The single set consider the bar a great meet-and-greet spot.

CAMBRIDGE. This festive Irish pub offers, along with a full bar, an outstanding array of appetizers, including Blarney puffs and lobster-and-chive rangoons. A full dinner menu includes steaks, seafood, pastas, pizzas, and sandwiches. Plus, the place happily stocks Leffe, a fine Belgian beer that can be hard to find. An interior of dark woods, low lighting, and windows that open onto the street calls out to Harvard students, and the bar makes for a great place to watch the hustle and bustle of busy Massachusetts Avenue.

CAMBRIDGE. This Cambridge pub, which has been in business since the 60s, hosts a diverse collection of regulars who enjoy Guinness on tap, along with other draft options. Bands play most nights – everything from Irish and bluegrass to country music – and crowds (often collegiate) are friendly and welcoming. TVs broadcast the latest soccer games when bands aren't playing.

NORTH END. The old red brick that houses this North End pub is a neighborhood landmark, but its story pales in comparison to that of its namesake, Goodwife Ann Glover, an Irish widow who was the last Bostonian hanged for practicing witchcraft (the deed occurred on 16 November 1688). Today, fortunately, the name "Goody" Glover is no longer associated with only tragedy – no, Goody's is a popular two-level gathering spot that is known for its haute take on traditional Irish grub and its pleasant, laid-back vibe.

BROOKLINE. This attractive watering hole certainly has an appeal that extends far beyond confines of its Washington Square setting. Contributing to this is the outstanding selection of international brews, which counts among its number microbrews from the New England States, pilsners from Germany and authentic Belgian ales. Equally impressive is the fare, which, thanks to dishes like Triticus-roasted lamb, Arrogant Bastard meatloaf and pumpkin ravioli, is reminiscent of what you'd find in Europe's trendy gastro-pubs. As to the scene, think mustard-hued walls, stained oak bar and the ubiquitous brass fixtures.

BROOKLINE. Although a pub in name and rank, Matt Murphy's is known far and wide for it's exceptional Irish cuisine. Guests can locate Irish newspapers and board games to help keep them entertained. Live folk and jazz music is played nightly.

KENMORE SQUARE. Cornwall's is a British pub that's located in Kenmore Square. With the aroma of fish and chips in the air and pints of ale roaming free, it's true tradition here in Boston. Regulars include Boston University students (who enjoy the relatively low prices) and neighborhood locals looking for a friendly after-work stop. In addition to more traditional, heavy fare, the menu also includes lighter offerings such as sandwiches and salads. Board games, darts, and video games amuse those looking to wile away a few free hours. Exposed brick walls and light wood tones make for an inviting interior.

BACK BAY. Crossroads (also occasionally known as Brodigan's) is a favorite Irish pub with locals. The place exudes an authentic Emerald Isle feel, thanks to a casual, laid-back atmosphere and large TV screens that broadcast the latest soccer games. The pub boasts two floors, and the larger upstairs area features dartboards, should you care to make a friendly wager on your skills.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. With a name like Purple Shamrock, you might expect traditional Irish with a twist – and you'd be right. The pub's windows open directly onto the street, and the menu features an array of New England seafood favorites (fresh lobster!) and thick steaks. You'll also find requisites like bangers-and-mash. Plus, the place is rightly proud of the filling, traditional Irish breakfasts it serves on Saturday and Sunday mornings. If you come at night, expect an upbeat atmosphere with live entertainment, karaoke, and DJs.
