BACK BAY. This elegant French restaurant, set in a circa-1873 townhouse, promises ambience as classy as the food. That's saying a lot, considering that the menu offers poached dayboat halibut, sautéed medallions of organic Vermont veal, and grilled partridge. The dessert menu is full of sweet delicacies, including chocolate soufflé and toasted almond crème brûlée. A great choice for special occasions. NB They're open for afternoon tea on Saturdays.

BACK BAY. This sophisticated restaurant offers eclectic French fare and views of the Boston Public Gardens. Representative offerings include butternut squash and lobster bisque, seared black sea bass, and roasted tenderloin of venison. Also available is a fixed menu wherein each course is paired with a complementary vintage. Also highly regarded is Aujourd'hui's Sunday brunch, an impressive affair with carving stations, cheese and seafood displays, and a stunning buffet that features dishes like seafood crêpes, Peking duck, smoked bacon and chocolate waffles.

BEACON HILL. This Beacon Hill dining room has quickly become a favorite with the State House crowd. Chef Barbara Lynch continually updates and tweaks the menu, which emphasizes fresh ingredients and places particular focus on regional Italian and French cuisines. Representative selections include black pearl salmon, pork belly confit with curried pumpkin purée, and prune-stuffed gnocchi. Lynch is especially famous for her homemade pastas. In contrast to the main dining room, reservations are not needed to dine in the cafe-bar.

WEST METRO. Eastern and Western cuisines are magnificently combined by celebrity chef Ming Tsai. The house specialty is Chilean Sea Bass with Vegetarian Soba Noodle Sushi. Other delicious entrées that you're sure to enjoy include Asian lacquered chicken, Indonesian curry pasta, grilled rack of lamb, and thyme-poached Maine lobster. Be sure and leave room for the jasmine rice pudding or the floating bird's nest for dessert.

BEACON HILL. Located in the charming XV Beacon Hotel, this steakhouse is famous for its giant selection and Kobe beef. The menu offer high-end appetizers like steamed PEI mussels and beef sirloin carpaccio for patrons to enjoy before digging into a tantalizing filet mignon, rib eye or NY sirloin. For those who'd rather skip the beef, grilled Alaskan King salmon and skillet roasted Cornish game hen make excellent alternatives.

BACK BAY. Designed by noted restaurant architect Adam Tihany, this sleek, refined space is a sight to behold, indeed. A stylish bar area occupies the first floor, but don't be enticed to spend your evening there. No, head upstairs using the glass paneled elevator, which passes through a tri-level (yes, three) "wine tower," and settle into one of the comfortable leather chairs in the clubby main dining room. Of course, there is sustenance to complement all the style, as dishes like Carolina grouper in lobster-tortilla bouillon or breast of Long Island duck in Marsala-fig sauce no doubt attest.

CAMBRIDGE. Rialto, set in the handsome Charles Hotel, is an eclectic restaurant whose menu focuses on regional Italian specialties prepared with the freshest a New England influence. Representative third courses include braised short rib with gorgonzola-potato fritter, pan-roasted ray with pine nuts and citrus butter, and halibut in lobster broth with fennel, mussels and squid. This romantic spot also dazzles palates with dessert offerings ranging from bombolini with tangerine mascarpone to honey-lemon pine nut tart with gelato.

SOUTH END. Located in the South End, this notable restaurant offers diners New American cuisine prepared by expert hands. The seasonal menu utilizes the freshest ingredients available on the market. Excellent entree choices include grilled swordfish and pepper-crusted venison chops. Intimate lighting and dark woods make the dining area at once cozy and elegant.

WEST METRO. A visit to IL Capriccio offers diners a pleasant excursion from downtown Boston to the suburb of Waltham. The Northern Italian cuisine is expertly prepared and presented. The menu is seasonal, but some terrific standbys remain, like the porcini souffle, gnocchi, ravioli and quail. The wine selection is well-selected and flawlessly served at the table. The interior of this establishment is plush and dimly lit, and the atmosphere is calming.
