Interesting Facts

  1. Brighton is Britain's number one seaside town, despite the fact that the beaches are pebbly. It all began in the 1750's when a doctor told Londoners that bathing and drinking the local seawater was good for them! We all know that drinking seawater has never been good for us, but that especially stands true today because some of the waters of Brighton are polluted!
  2. Unfortunately, Brighton's reputation hasn't always been positive! In the 1770's, Prince Regent, known later as George IV, began visiting the town with his mistress!
  3. Despite the fact that Brighton is a city full of Georgian charm, upscale shopping, and delightful restaurants, the city definitely thrives as a footloose and fancy-free center. English vacationers and the thousands of students that abound in the city add to the eclectic mix that makes the city buzz.
  4. King George IV converted a farmhouse into the whimsical Royal Pavilion. Any visit to Brighton should include a stop at this exotic extravaganza. John Nash, the architect of Regent Street in London, designed the palace with its oriental flair.
  5. Brighton Museum and Art Gallery are sites that should not be missed. Even though the paintings here are commonplace, the museum houses a collection of classic Art Deco and art nouveau furniture. One piece to really check out is Salvador Dali's famous sofa, which is created in the image of Mae West's lips!
  6. If you're hungry, Brighton is the place for you! The city has the greatest concentration of restaurants in the southeast outside of London. After your meal, you can easily check out a movie. Brighton has more cinema screens per person than any other city in Britain!
  7. Hove, actually! Lying just west of Brighton is the slightly pretentious city called Hove. Often referred to as "Hove, actually," the residents of the city want to make it perfectly clear that they are not from Brighton!
  8. Brighton Festival is the largest arts festival outside Edinburgh. Each May, the celebration runs for three weeks and includes fun fairs, exhibitions, street theatre, and concerts!
  9. Brighton Beach and its memoirs! You're not going to forget the sites of this area too soon! The city is the site of Britain's first officially designated "clothing optional" beach. Local signs simply refer to it as "Nudist Beach."
  10. The original London to Brighton car run finished on the steps of the Metropole Hotel in 1896, and a symbolic red flag was destroyed. Until this time, motorcars had to be preceded by a person on foot waving a red flag. Today, however, the city is trying to discourage cars all together!
