Launched in Bristol in July 1843, the SS Great Britain is the largest and most powerful ship built at the time and was the first propeller-driven iron ship to cross the Atlantic. After languishing in the Falkland Islands for 80 years, the SS Great Britain was finally returned to Bristol and has since enjoyed an extensive restoration project. The design of this prototype is readily reflected in many of history's ships, both past and present. The SS Great Britain museum has won 14 major awards.
