A member of the Historic Houses Association, this castle enjoys a rich, storied history. In royal possession until the death of Edward VI, the castle is famous as the site of King Edward II's imprisonment and murder in 1327. The structure sustained considerable damage during the English Civil War, although it has now undergone extensive repairs. Lovely gardens surround the castle, which houses a variety of artifacts and treasures including a Butterfly House that contains the world's largest moth.
