BRUNSWICK. Barbecue is not just a food in the South, it is a storied custom, with BBQ pits competing for the prize of most savory servings. And this Brunswick eatery is among the best for Texas-style, smoky beef plates. The ambience is limited but the menu is a delectable offering of traditional tastes. Friendly servers and staff keep the plates moving and stomachs filled here. Allen's is a great place to stop for lunch when traveling through Brunswick to the Georgia coast.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND. As its name implies, this popular restaurant has the look and feel of an old barnhouse, and it has been a cozy Southern spot for travelers to St. Simons for more than half a century, making it the oldest eatery on the island. The down-home ambience, pitch-perfect service and delectable menu make for a mouth-watering meander to this beach resort. The best choices on the menu are the first-class steak entrees, fresh and cooked to taste over an open pit of oak. Being a coastal eatery, there is also a selection of seafood entrees. A private dining is available for large parties or business groups.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND. "We get fish, you get fresh," this eatery crows and rightly so. The seafood entrees here are among the best in the area and all plates are delicious and economically priced. From the grilled fish and specialties to soups, salads and starters, there is a mouthful to choose from here. If fish is not on your menu, try the grilled steaks, chicken marsala or fontina chops. Pair the meal with a selection from the wine menu or a mixed martini.
