ST. SIMONS ISLAND. Coastal Georgia for a time was the home of missionary John Wesley, later the founder of the Methodist Church, and this museum at the retreat center is among the largest conference-owned United Methodist museums in the world. Visitors to the center can read historical letters and texts, tour exhibits that trace the growth and development of Methodism around the world and learn about the region during America's colonial period. Tours are interesting for the entire family and guides are available to answer questions and provide essential information. There is an on-site hotel as well as meeting rooms and recreation facilities.

BRUNSWICK. The region of Southern Coastal Georgia that is home to Brunswick and the Golden Isles has long been rich in trees, notably the mighty live oak tree. Many trees from this area were used in the building of famous battleships. This large and historic specimen in the heart of old town Brunswick has a storied history. It is said that Native American tribesmen and maidens would meet and kiss their true love under the branches of the tree, hence earning its moniker. While locals claim the tree is upwards of 900 years old, scientists question its real age. No matter, travelers to the region flock to the famous site to have their picture taken beneath the thick, overhanging branches.

BRUNSWICK. Dating from the mid-18th century when Georgia was founded by colonist James Oglethorpe, Brunswick's historic district is the second largest historic area in the state, after Savannah. There are a range of architectural styles represented in the quaint in-town neighborhoods, and visitors to the region can walk among the Queen Anne, Jacobean, Gothic and Italianate homes that front the tree-lined streets. Two-hour guided tours include a look at the grasses and vegetation, animals and marsh life in addition to the plantation history of the region. Boat tours offer a splendid way to see the preserves up close and are a great treat for family members of all ages. Spring is the best time to tour as summer temperatures can be oppressive. Call ahead to schedule; credit card is accepted to reserve the tour, but cash required for actual payment. NB Four person minimum, six maximum.
