10. University of Vermont

BURLINGTON.   A primary reason that Burlington boasts one of the state's most thriving social scenes is the University of Vermont (or UVM – "Universitas Vinidis Montis"), which dates from 1791 and is the fifth-oldest university in New England. The campus, which sits atop a hill overlooking town, is noteworthy for its tree-lined pathways, rolling green spaces, and rich architectural styles, featured in Victorian, Federal, Colonial Revival, and Art Deco buildings.
