BOLTON VALLEY. Trapp Family Lodge is owned and managed by the von Trapps, one of the world's best known and beloved musical families. The von Trapps, the inspiration for the film, The Sound of Music, opened this stunning Austrian-style retreat a few years after settling in Vermont in the 1940s. Located in a picturesque, mountain setting overlooking the village of Stowe, the Trapp Family Lodge is one of Vermont's top resorts, with an authentic Austrian ambience and an array of year-round activities. Music continues to be important, with a harpist in the dining room, a pianist in the lounge, concerts and sing-a-longs. Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride, then cross-country ski or snow-shoe over 100kms of trails, stop in the Slayton Pasture Cabin where bowls of steaming home-made soup wait by a roaring log fire. In summer, there are garden tours, Nordic walking paths, concerts in the meadow, tennis, massage therapy and a wide range of workshops.
