This local brewery has grown from a small enterprise to a slightly larger, and critically respected, enterprise. Begun in 1985 by a former lawyer, barley farmer and beer aficionado, the brewery now produces some of the best independently-crafted beer in North America. Batch-brewed ales are the specialty, and they've become incredibly popular throughout Canada and the States. Sporting whimsical names like Cold Cock Winter Porter, Grasshopper Wheat Ale, and Warthog Cream Ale, the beer has a sense of humor in its advertising while cultivating a seriousness in its approach to production. Visitors may tour the modern facility Monday through Wednesday and are provided samples of the product so that they may taste the quality for themselves.

A punctuation of exoticism and color in Calgary's downtown, this beautiful structure plays home to a museum, gallery, gift shop, gym, auditorium, restaurant and more. Its central hall rises 70 feet to a dome that's been painstakingly adorned with intricate designs and exuberant color, especially red, the Chinese color for luck. The dome, which was modeled after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, is supported by four gold-leafed pillars that represent the seasons. Smaller columns correspond to the months of the year. The museum includes displays of porcelain, ceramics, textiles, furniture and replicas of tomb treasures. Terrific restaurants in the area serve delicious, authentic cuisine – make sure you stop in for a meal or a quick bite.

Nowadays, it serves as a training facility for athletes and is used by the city's residents throughout the year. Although the original ski jumps are off-limits to the public, you'll find ski and snowboarding slopes, winter bobsleigh rides, a park for mountain biking, summer luge rides and year-round zipline rides. You can also take a bus tour of the facility or visit the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum. Several restaurants and a gift shop are also located on the premises. Sure, it's called a casino, but it's actually much more than that. Sisson's does offer an array of blackjack, poker and roulette games, but you'll also find video lottery terminals (VLTs) and slot machines if you want to play without the presence of dealers. In addition, there are TVs to watch (especially sports events), restaurants to dine at, and a bowling alley that sports over 35 lanes. Plus, the complex sponsors music concerts (Garth Brooks and Emmylou Harris have performed here) and conventions throughout the year.

Space and aviation have always held a special allure for kids, who let their imaginations run wild with thoughts of the unknown. This center mediates the fantasy with an array of scientific exhibits about flight, technology and the future of air travel. Flight and motion simulators give kids a chance to man their own ships and fly about the cosmos. They can also experiment with air-pressurized rockets to learn about thrust, explore the radar screens that help air traffic controllers monitor planes, and build a space station of their own. Thanks to an agreement with NASA, the center also boasts a model of a space shuttle, along with rocks actually collected from moon walks.

It somehow seems fitting that Calgary's largest casino should be located on the grounds of Stampede, home to the city's best-known annual event. In the expansive space, visitors will find an array of table games and slot machines to keep them occupied. If you decide to break away for refreshments, you'll find a restaurant, cafe and a lounge, although if you want to stick to your lucky position, they'll bring your favorite alcoholic beverage tableside.

Although it's best known for hosting rodeo activities at Calgary's annual Stampede event, thoroughbred and harness racing takes place here much of the year, and facilities are available for trade shows and conventions throughout the year. Even if you don't make it for Stampede, you might want to walk around the grounds and take in the ambience. The casino operates year-round in Big Four Building, and the Grain Academy in Roundup Centre provides a glimpse into the workings of Calgary's agricultural industry. If you're here during Stampede, you'll come to know the place very well without too much added effort.

If your kids are fascinated by science, or if you're looking to spark their interest in the natural world, this is a wonderful place to bring them. The center boasts a variety of exhibits and interactive displays to educate kids about dinosaurs, the human body, astronomy, gravity, building and construction, and the natural processes by which oil is created. Among the attractions you'll find are multi-media programs and laser shows. Terrific sound system and production values.
