This stylish venue has attracted quite a following since its inception. Just off Stephen Avenue, Murietta's refurbished building boasts high ceilings, exposed brick, and hip furnishings. The open dining room has an exhibition kitchen, from which come such treats as Australian rack of lamb, roast chicken, osso bucco, bouillabaisse, fresh fish, and a variety of pastas. If you have room after these dishes, make sure to try something from the dessert menu. The Squirrel Nut Tart is fantastic if you love nuts; it combines hazelnuts, pecans, and pistachios and is topped with whiskey-laced cream. Delicious! Adjoining the dining room is a bar area that's incredibly popular in the evenings. It's great on its own or as a before- or after-dinner hangout.

When your mind fixates on red meat, with its rich flavor, tenderness and sizzle, you'll want to come here to satisfy the craving. The Chophouse features local Canadian beef that's dry-aged, ensuring that you get a terrific cut of meat. Prime rib is the real draw, juicy and succulent, although the pork isn't too shabby either. You can order something manageable, like the 8-oz. filet mignon, or be a complete profligate and opt for the 42-oz. porterhouse (you are supposed to share it with someone else). Chicken, seafood and burgers are also available. Everything is a la carte, so if you want side items, you'll have to order them separately. Wines add an extra note of luxury.

Lovely views of the lake and the surrounding landscape are a bonus to your meal at Newport Grill. Large expanses of windows make sure that each room takes in the beauty. The menu is somewhat extensive and is influenced by both Continental traditions and native Canadian fare. Among the selections are Alberta beef, rabbit, seafood and lamb. The filet mignon, New York strip and chateaubriand are popular dishes, especially for those who choose to celebrate a romantic occasion at the restaurant. A patio jutting out over the water adds a nice touch on warm days, and the brunch on Sunday invites guests to linger over the delicious cuisine.

Simultaneously classy and casual, this bistro tempts Calgarians with its terrific cuisine, intimate charm, and original artwork. The Italian fare is robust and looks to pastas, chicken, and steak for its main courses. Bolstering the menu are items like herb-crusted salmon and grilled lamb. Divino also makes a terrific burger, whether it's crafted of lamb or Alberta beef, and you'll find a selection of soups and sandwiches as well. Given its reputation as a wine bar, Divino carries a host of vintages available by the bottle and glass. Most come from Italy, France, and the States, although you may find a few renegade bottles occasionally. Perfect for dinner, but call for reservations since the place fills up quickly.

5. Peters' Drive-in

219 16th Ave NE, Calgary, AB T2E 1J9 · 403-277-2747

This unassuming place is legendary with Calgarians in the know, and it's so popular that lines to the drive-through are constantly packed. Burgers and milkshakes are the main draw. Everything is made fresh daily, and the portions are more than substantial. Hot, crisp fries and onion rings make the perfect accompaniment; you know they haven't just come out of the freezer by their texture and flavor. Of course, the food isn't the height of healthful cooking, but it's not often you find offerings this authentic. Toss caution to the wind and enjoy drive-in food like it used to be made. There's always time for dieting later.

6. Smuggler's Inn

Devoted to serving terrific Alberta beef, this restaurant is an area favorite and has been for several decades. It's not as upscale as some of the other steakhouses, but it's a reliable institution that knows how to prepare a good steak. The specialty is roast prime rib of beef, and it comes in several juicy cuts. You'll also find lobster, ribs, pasta, and rotisserie chicken. Side dishes come separately, but each entree is accompanied by bread, soup, and a salad bar, so unless you just have to have a baked potato, chances are that you'll have plenty to eat. If the place happens to be busy (as it tends to be), you're welcome to have a drink in the lounge while you wait.

7. Montana's Cookhouse

5562 Richmond Rd SW, Signal Hill Centre, Calgary, AB · 403-217-1100

Western in theme, decor and food, this casual establishment offers up hearty, rustic fare that harks back to Calgary's early days. This is food for cowboys and those who perform physical labor (and anyone who likes meat, for that matter). You'll find steaks, burgers, rotisserie chicken and ribs at the top of the menu, along with southwestern-influenced dishes like quesadillas, fajitas, chili, pastas and the like. Desserts are just as substantial and require a bit of reserve space in your belly. A kid's menu takes care of those who are just developing an adult appetite, and the bar serves up the modern-day equivalent of white lightning and moonshine. Saddle up!

8. The Ranche

Set in a hundred-year-old home built for a wealthy ranch-owner, this stately restaurant boasts period details and furnishings that befit the era. It has recently been refurbished and is now a magnet for those who desire fabulous food in genteel surroundings. Canadian cuisine is the draw, composed of local game, seafood, duck, and pork. The savory entrees are updates of classic fare, like smoked ahi tuna on wild rice pancakes, braised rabbit lasagna, caribou over wild mushroom ragout, and cedar-roasted duck breast. Everything is expertly prepared and well-presented, including the luscious desserts, made fresh in-house. Perfect for special occasions or anytime you want a superb meal. Less than 20 minutes from downtown.
