It is difficult to believe that these peaceful greens next to the River Cam, just two steps from the city centre, have a violent history. It was here that Thomas Thorley, Bishop of Norwich, and John Huller, Vicar of Babraham, were burned at the stake in the mid-16th century. Contrary to its history, the large area is now full of people enjoying the 110-yard outdoor swimming pool (the longest in the country!), the well-manicured gardens, and the tennis courts. The tennis courts are free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis in winter, but you must call and reserve in summer. A small stand offers ice-creams and refreshments, as well as toilets open during daylight hours. The city council plans an ambitious renovation program which should see improved surfaces and play areas in the green.
