Founded in 1861, this museum is one of Britain's oldest, and many would argue that it is also one of the best. After extensive renovation, its gleaming white temple-like façade now fronts a 21st-century interior. A separate ground floor entrance has been added (the 'Courtyard entrance') to enable disabled access. Permanent exhibits display some of the most unique and rare collections of antiques, ceramics, paintings, and manuscripts. Several of the exclusive items originated in ancient Greece, Europe and Rome. Works by such renowned artists as Monet, Degas, Hogarth and Constable are all housed under this very roof. There are frequent excellent exhibitions, free lunchtime concerts, workshops and guided tours. You can also pick up an audio guide.
