This magnificent cathedral rests a 20-minute ride from Cambridge in the lively town of Ely. Etheldreda, a queen of Northumbria, founded the cathedral when she became a nun in 673. Construction of this place of worship was completed in 1189. Today visitors come from near and far to view the magnificent Octagon and lantern that was built in 1322 after the initial central tower collapsed. Additional aspects of interest include the lady chapel and the stained glass museum. In summer you can take a tour up the Octagon tower for magnificent views over Ely and the surrounding area. There is a lovely cafe serving homemade cakes, and a good gift shop. It's also worth paying a visit to the Cathedral's Almonry restaurant, which serves delicious British cuisine in a cosy downstairs dining room.
