6. Cambridge Town Bumps

The Buzz -- Cambridge Town Bumps is one of the major highlights of the sporting year. The race takes place over four days at the end of July, and all the boat clubs in Cambridge take part. The rules may seem bizarre - 20 8-strong rowing boats line up with a boat length's distance between them. At the starting cannon, all the boats start rowing like crazy - the object being to hit the boat in front of you before the boat behind hits you! It's very messy and lots of fun. Just stroll down the river Cam or - even better - go to the Plough Pub in Fen Ditton, which is where many boats get hit halfway through the race.
