The West Gate dates back to the late 14th century, when it was used as a prison during that tumultuous period of peasant uproars. Today, visitors have access into the museum to view the daunting murder holes, the Civil War armory, and the guard chamber. Brass rubbings and hands-on body armor displays are also available. The tower cells where prisoners were held are included in the sites, along with access to the tower roof, which affords excellent views of the city.
