St. Augustine built this structure in 598 at the persuasion of King Ethelbert, a newly converted Christian, and since that time the cathedral has played many various roles. It served as a place of burial for rulers and archbishops and was known as a place of knowledge due to the monks' illumined manuscripts. In 1538, Henry VIII re-routed the cathedral's objective by turning it into a palace, which eventually perished and was sold. In 1989, the church became a World Heritage Site. Many visitors come to see what remains of the original structure, which consists of the Norman crypt, the Chapel of St. Pancras, and a component of the nave of the Abbey.
