More about Canterbury
Thomas More was born here. Geoffrey Chaucer immortalized the city in his "Canterbury Tales." St. Augustine tried to Christianize the area. And the Archbishop Thomas à Becket was martyred here. Suffice it to say, Canterbury is blessed with a rich history. Situated in the southeastern corner of England, Canterbury lies within the rural county of Kent, which is often called "The Garden of England." What the city lacks in modern urbanization it makes up for in medieval landmarks, a picturesque rolling countryside, and charming Tudor dwellings. In fact, tourism is a big draw and Canterbury ranks as England's second-most visited city. The biggest attraction, of course, is the famous Canterbury Cathedral, which contains the Shrine of Thomas à Becket and still attracts a number of pilgrims each year. Other highlights include St. Augustine's Abbey, St. Martin's Church, and the captivating Royal Museum.
