Both figuratively and literally, Cardiff Castle has always been at the heart of Cardiff's rich history and tradition. Founded by the Romans and later added to by Cardiff's 11th- and 12th-century Norman invaders, the castle is the source of inspiration for many Cardiff legends. The third Marquess of Bute transformed the castle into its current state of splendor during the 19th century with the help of architect William Burges, known as the 'eccentric genius'. As well as tours of the lavish interiors, the castle offers an exhibition and film centre and multi-media guides to help you explore the grounds. There's a good café and shop, and you can take in some of Cardiff's best city views from the roof terrace.
