Designed by William Burges for his patron, the wealthy Marquess of Bute, the fairytale-like Castell Coch is the ultimate Victorian tribute to the Middle Ages. Set in the picturesque Taff Gorge, the ornate castle boasts a working drawbridge, replicas of medieval siege machinery, and walls painted with scenes from Aesop's Fables. Castell Coch, whose name is Welsh for 'Red Castle', was built on top of an old 13th-century castle with the same name. There are no guided tours on offer, but for a virtual tour, see www.castellcoch.info. the property closes for six weeks every winter for renovation.
