Formerly a scruffy dockland area exporting millions of tons of coal each year, Cardiff Bay has been transformed into a bright, sparky, shiny-clean harbour packed with attractions. A barrage has created a 200-hectare freshwater lake which is now a major centre for water sports. The whole area is teeming with bars and restaurants and there are regular free events sponsored by the council. At the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre (known as the 'Tube' as it was designed to look like a giant telescope), you'll find information, exhibitions, a miniature scale model of the harbour, and a small shop as well as public toilets.
