Sitting in the heart of Cardiff City Centre is the Centre for Visual Arts, home of one of the British Isles' few interactive art galleries, the Fantasmic. With more than 100 separate interactive exhibits, the museum is a unique mix of fun and learning and offers something for everybody. There are two other smaller galleries whose exhibits change on a monthly basis, as well as Slots, a lunchtime lecture series given by featured artists.

The Museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans is an open-air museum whose goal is to celebrate the culture and history of the Welsh people. Here, visitors are whisked back nearly 2,000 years to see a reconstructed Celtic settlement, then slowly walked through history to the present day and on to the still-in-progress "House of the Future." Exhibits you'll see along the way include a Victorian schoolroom, manor home, and pre-war grocery.

The National Museum and Gallery of Cardiff is one of the city's true gems. Visitors can enjoy exhibits ranging from art and archeology to the earth sciences. The art collection features an admirable collection of Impressionist work, including "La Parisienne" by Renoir, as well as traditional Welsh favorites such as Augustus and Gwen John. The archeology exhibits also are quite extensive, covering everything from dinosaur remains to artifacts left by Roman and Nordic conquerors.

Techniquest

Located on Stuart Street, Techniquest is the UK's most visited science discovery centre. Containing more than 160 interactive exhibits, Techniquest offers a hands-on environment that is both fun and educational for people of all ages. In addition to two exhibition floors, visitors can enjoy presentations in the Science Theatre, Planetarium and Discovery Room.

Turner House Gallery Penarth

In cooperation with the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, Turner House features temporary exhibitions of artwork on loan from the museums' vast collections. Located eight kilometers (five miles) south of Cardiff, the Turner House, which was established in 1888, offers visitors the chance to see special collections of art, examples of work done by local artists, and touring exhibitions in an intimate environment.

If you are looking to learn a little about Welsh military history, try the Welsh Regiment Museum, located at history-laden Cardiff Castle. This museum was established to honor the accomplishments and services rendered by the 41st Foot, 69th Foot, and Royal Regiment of Wales. Between 1719 and 1969, Welsh regimental forces fought in Waterloo, South Africa, and both World Wars.
