The wall covers a stretch of over 80 miles. There are numerous shorter segments provided for touring and hiking, the stretch from Birdoswald to Gilsland makes for a great excursion. Built in 122 AD under the commands of Emperor Hadrian, the wall outlined the northern border of the Roman Empire. The wall is very well maintained, considering it has been in existence for so many centuries. Guided tours are available at various stops. Ask the visitor center for more information.
