Overview
As the largest city in Cumbria – England's Lake District – Carlisle is shrouded in myth and legend. The famous Scots, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, repeatedly laid siege to the area, as did the Danes and countless others before them. The region is perhaps most famous for Hadrian's Wall, which are the remnants of an old fortified Roman barrier. Carlisle, which is often called the Border City, has a rich heritage, but it's also recognized as a modern commercial and industrial center. The economy is bolstered by tourism, as well. Visitors should take in the medieval Carlisle Castle, built by William Rufus; Carlisle Cathedral, which dates back to the twelfth century; and the terrific Tullie House Museum, which showcases Carlisle's past. The Great Fair, held in late August, has been attracting crowds since the fourteenth century.
