2. Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens

WATERLOO.   Various gardens showcase native plants or are dedicated to a community project at this arboretum. The "enabling garden" is specially designed for persons with physical disabilities. Flowers with different scents and textures are meant to be touched closely and smelled, and the pathways are extra-wide to allow wheelchair and walker access. The Sesquicentennial forest features trees native to Iowa, especially the Cedar Valley area. The children's garden has a maze, an aquatic pool and giant dinosaur bones, just waiting for budding paleontologists to discover them. Another special garden grows vegetables for the local food bank—often over 1,000 pounds are harvested.   (© 10Best)
